The Okotoks Food Bank has been serving families since 1985. We’re a primarily volunteer run organization governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a paid Executive Director.

We provide fresh produce, eggs, margarine, frozen meat and vegetables, non-perishable food items, bread and milk cards. We also provide non-food and personal care items as available.

We are a registered charity under the Societies Act and provide tax receipts to donors. We are supported by eleven ministerial churches. We receive support of food and monetary donations from Food Drives, Fundraisers and donations from individuals and businesses.

Clientele

Individuals and families currently accessing our services include:

• Clients “in transition” including:

– those experiencing job loss or reduction in work hours

– those experiencing a recent family breakdown

– those with unexpected emergencies

• single parents

• the working poor

• seniors with low pension income

• residents on income support

• people with mental illness or physical injuries or disabilities

 

Programs & Services

Hamper Program: Through a phone or in person intake system, Okotoks and area residents (this includes Aldersyde, Davisburg, DeWinton and parts of the MD of Foothills) in need can book an appointment to receive an food hamper – 403-651-6629. IF YOU HAVE CONTACTED US FOR ASSISTANCE VIA EMAIL PLEASE KNOW WE ALWAYS REPLY. Help Yourself Shelf Program: Access to these shelves do not require an appointment and are open limited days and times, please check below for access hours.

As we have limited staff, there will be occasions when we are unable to be in the office, these times will be posted on the front door and website with as much notice as possible, we apologize in advance for this inconvenience.

Statistics

The Food Bank has seen a considerable increase in demand over the past few years. We served 1002 families in 2015, 61% of which were adults and 39% children through our regular Weekly Hamper Program. We were also able to provide additional support to through our Help Yourself Shelf Program with 1,161 visits in the second half of 2015 alone. We have experienced significant increases in the past several years with a 47% increased in demand from 2014 to 2015.

Now, in 2016, the increase for families and individuals struggling with food insecurity has jumped another 46% in the first three months compared to this time last year. The current economic hardships in Alberta and increased food prices continue to make create difficulty for families and individuals trying to make ends meet.

Donations of non-perishable food may be dropped off in bins at Sobeys, Safeway & Okotoks Natural Foods Market stores here in Okotoks. There are also donation bins at Okotoks Recreation Centre (in front on Natural High Fitness), Okotoks Eco Centre, and Pason Centennial Arena.

For larger food donations please make an appointment for drop off by calling 403-651-6629. You may register your Food Drive here on our website as well, we have fantastic Donation Barrels available for your Food Drive or business location.
